Soil research in Europe: an overview

The picture depicts main actors in European soil research: In the center is the EU Soil Mission “A Soil Deal for Europe”, that aims at establishing 100 living labs and lighthouses to lead the transition towards healthy soils by 2030. More the 60 EU projects are part of the Mission Soil. The Mission Soil has published a project hub that provides information on projects funded under the Mission and other relevant initiatives. Other actors are the European Soil Observatory, other EU funding programmes (Technical Support Instrument, LIFE), Regional programmes (ESPON, INTERREG), SOILVER (self-financed platform of European funders) and the European Confederation of Soil Science Societies. Further there are Public-Private Partnerships (e.g. EIP-AGRI with its Research and Innovation projects (R&I) and Focus Groups (were part of the partnership until 2021)), the CAP-Multi-Actor projects and the CAP Network with Focus Groups and Public-Public Partnerships (EJP SOIL, PRIMA). Main outcomes of the EJP SOIL project, that ended in 2025, are a provisional strategic research agenda (2025 – 2035) for agricultural soil research in Europe and the Soil Innovation Partnership, that is in a scoping phase from 2025-2026. Lastly there are also EU projects developing strategic research agendas (ORCASA, SOLO).
