In the EU between 60-70% of soils are degraded (JRC, 2012). Intensive land management leads to deprivation of at least one soil function. Investment in soil monitoring is needed, especially regional assessment on soil management and assessment of the gaps.

European research and national soil data will be included in the European-chapter of the Status of the World Soil Resources Report (SWSR). The GSP/ITPS is currently preparing the 2nd edition of the SWSR, to be published in 2025 . The Europe-chapter is being prepared by JRC, EEA and networks with country involvement and subregional assessments.
