Action Plan for Forest Soils in France

After two years of work from the Forest and Wood Timber Assises, together with stakeholders and experts, the Action Plan for the preservation of forest soils has been published on Thursday, 24th of July, following a public consultation in the first quarter of 2025. The plan is part of the National Low Carbon Strategy, the National Climate Change Adaptation Plan, the National Biodiversity 2030 Strategy and the National Forest and Timber Programme.

The plan contains numerical targets and identifies concrete actions until 2030, aiming at restoring and preserving carbon, biodiversity, chemical fertility and physical integrity in forest soils and regulating soils in the water cycle.

The targets, comprising 16 action points, are bound around five main aspects:

  • Knowledge and monitoring of forest soils;

  • Mobilization of wood with low-impact practices and equipment;

  • Training and awareness-raising on sustainable forest soil management;

  • Provision of economic support for forestry and the most virtuous material investments; and

  • Regulation of factors of pressure in forest policy, regulations and contractual tools.

The whole Action Plan is published here (in French).
